Hosting for the Holidays
It’s officially the season of stretchy pants, festive chaos, and pretending your dining room table isn’t covered in clutter 364 days a year. It’s also the time of year when we take a breath, look around, and feel extra thankful—for family, friends, cozy homes, and of course, pie (lots of pie). Whether you’re rolling up your sleeves to host Thanksgiving this year or just trying to make your home feel a little more festive without lighting anything on fire, I’ve got you covered with some easy, stress-busting tips for hosting the holidays.
And if cooking’s not your thing? No judgment here. I’ve also rounded up a few local spots where you can order a fully-catered Thanksgiving dinner that’ll impress your guests and leave your kitchen clean. So grab a cozy beverage, settle in, and let’s make this holiday season your most joyful (and least stressful) one yet!
Before the Event:
Schedule backwards from the event day so you can plan when to shop, clean, prep, cook, and set up. Make a Master Plan with a checklist for all the things: food, drinks, seating, décor, music. Delegate to others attending so not everything falls on you! Let others bring sides, desserts, or drinks. People want to help.
Planning the Menu:
Stick with Proven Recipes. Don’t try five brand-new Pinterest recipes the day of. Delegate! Your mother in law will be happy to contribute a dish. Plan ahead by making some dishes ahead of time so that you’re not stuck in the kitchen all day. Buy a few pre-made items from a good bakery or grocery store to save time. Prep what you can in advance, and plan for leftovers. Have containers ready or ask guests to bring some to share the bounty.
Try My Fool-proof Mac & Cheese Recipe:
Trust me, no one will know that it's not homemade. Head to Wegman's and pick up a pan their mac & cheese, a bag of shredded cheddar, and some breadcrumbs too. When you get home, grease up a casserole dish with butter and plop the mac in there. Cover with extra cheese and breadcrumbs. Spray with olive oil. Bake in preheated oven until it's brown and bubbly. Work smarter not harder.
Make it Memorable:
Set the tone and make everyone feel appreciated with a toast to kick things off! Create a Gratitude Wall by putting up a kraft paper scroll or poster where guests can write what they’re thankful for. Handwritten Place Cards or Menus are also a simple touch that feels warm and personal. Or what about a fun activity for the Kids? (or Adults!). You can do a coloring tablecloth, board games, or a “What are you thankful for?” jar. So many possibilities!
Clean Up:
Empty the Dishwasher before guests arrive that way you have the space to load it up when your guests leave. If you’re hosting a large group, use compostable or disposable plates and cutlery to make cleaning a breeze! Have a clear spot where guests can take off their shoes and hang their belongings that way none of your guests leave without their things. Bonus points: guests won’t be tracking dirty shoes through your house either!
